Hair masks are like supercharged conditioners that give your hair an intense dose of nourishment, moisture and repair.
If your hair is feeling a little dry or damaged incorporating a hair mask into your hair care routine can make a world of difference. We asked our team of expert stylists how to use them and some tips on the best hair masks on the market.

What are hair masks and why are they important?
Hair masks are a deep conditioning treatment designed to add moisture to your hair. Unlike regular conditioners, hair masks deliver intense deeper hydration and nutrients where they’re needed most. The best hair masks are packed with good ingredients like vitamins and oils to help your hair.
Moisturise
A hair mask can provide much needed moisture to your strands leaving them feeling soft and silky.
Repair Damage
Whether it’s heat styling or environmental factors, hair masks help to repair and strengthen your hair.
Enhance Shine and Gloss
If you’re hair needs a little revitalization a good hair mask can give you a healthy finish.
Smooth Frizz
Tame those flyways and frizz with a hair mask which helps to smooth and seal your hair cuticle.
Protect
Some hair masks offer protection against future damage by strengthening the hair and making it more resilient.
How to use a hair mask?
Using a hair mask is simple and can easily fit into your hair care routine, here are our top tips for getting the most out of your chosen mask.
Choose the right mask, select a product that targets your hair concerns whether that’s dryness, damage or frizz.
Wash your hair, start with clean, damp hair. Shampoo your hair as usual and rinse thoroughly. Hair masks work best on clean hair.
Apply your mask, take generous amounts of the hair mask and apply it evenly from mid-lengths to ends. If you have extensions in, make sure to avoid the root area where the connection for your extensions is. Use a wide tooth comb to brush through your hair and evenly distribute the mask.
Leave it on, most hair masks you need to leave on for at least 5-10 minutes. If you want a deeper treatment, then you can leave them on even longer.
Rinse thoroughly, once the mask has had time to work its magic, rinse your hair thoroughly with lukewarm water. Ensure all the product is washed out to avoid residue on your hair.
Dry and style as usual, you should notice an immediate difference in how soft, shiny and manageable your hair feels.
If You Have Extensions
Apply the mask from mid-lengths to ends only. Avoid the root area where the bond or connection sits. You can use any mask, just treat the hair as you would your own.
Which hair mask should I buy?
We caught up with our team of expert stylists to find out which hair masks are at the top of their wish list.
Katie, Senior Stylist
“I love the Phillip Kingsley elasticizer, the pink one. It makes your hair feel like literal silk, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s perfect for the days that your hair is feeling a bit dull. This mask makes your hair feel brand new. When it comes to using masks with hair extensions you can use any mask, just treat it like it’s your own hair, so no applying it to the roots, only the mid lengths and ends.”
Liv, Stylist
Shu Uemura Ultimate Reset & Kerastase Chroma Absolu
“Any of the Shu Uemura hair mask, the ultimate reset is one of my favourites, it’s so good it makes your hair feel very smooth and glossy. I feel like it’s quite popular, the girls in the salon really like this brand for hair masks. Another good one is the Kerastase Chroma Absolute hair mask, their products are always so good, so this is another good one for people who want to invest in a good hair mask.”
Summary
Whether your use hair masks weekly or just as an occasional treatment, they can make a noticeable difference to the heath and appearance of your hair. Take the time to find the right masks for your hair type and enjoy the benefits of softer, shinier and healthier hair! Your hair will certainly thank you.

Sarah McKenna is the founder of Vixen & Blush and The London Hair Lab. Sarah graduated as a research biochemist in 2005 and started a career within the pharmaceutical industry, before becoming a hair extensions expert. In 2010, Sarah gained insight into the hair extensions industry and could see that clients had a very poor value/quality proposition. At that time, poor-quality hair extensions were available, at prohibitively high prices. Sarah left her initial career and set out on a mission to improve the hair extensions industry in the UK, using her research and development skills.
Spending 3 years securing a high-quality and sustainable supply of human hair, Sarah then developed new products and fitting techniques to allow long-term refits of the same hair. In this way, Sarah was able to offer hair extensions services at a more affordable price to clients, while improving the quality of the service for her clients.
With Vixen & Blush starting in 2012 as a 1 chair salon in London, Sarah quickly grew the business to what it is today, a team of more than 20 hair professionals working together as London’s leading hair extensions specialists.
