Ever wondered what it’s like to go behind the scenes at your favourite salon?

Ever wondered what it’s like to go behind the scenes at your favourite salon?

Have you ever wondered what a typical day looks like for a stylist at Vixen and Blush? We are a busy central London salon that sees many clients come in and out each day. The stylist’s job is to combine creativity and technical skill to help their clients look and feel their best!

In this blog, we’ll walk you through a day in the life of a stylist, from the early morning preparations to the final touches on the last client. Each appointment brings something new, making everyday day in the salon a little different.

A typical day in the salon starts with checking the diary, things can change throughout the day, so it’s important our stylists know which clients are coming in and what preparations are needed.

Once the client has been seated in the stylist’s chair, they make sure they are as comfortable as possible Katie our stylist explains “When a client is in my chair, I always make sure to grab them a drink, whether it’s tea, coffee, or water, and get them comfy for their appointment. Since some appointments can last over three hours, ensuring the client feels relaxed and at ease is just as important as the service itself.”

Once all the prep is complete the process of applying extensions flows smoothly “after the preparation it’s quite simple. We’ve all been doing extensions for so long, so it’s consulting, washing, fitting and styling” the routine becomes second nature, allowing our stylists to focus on giving flawless results while making the experience seamless for each client.” James our senior stylist agrees “it’s routine to us now, we fit extensions everyday all day so it’s like second nature to me.”

We offer 4 different methods in the salon as well as added services such as K18 so each appointment can be quite different. We have first time clients coming in for their consultations and seasoned extension wearers back for their third re fits!

The length of the appointments varies on the method, length and desired result and the diary is carefully managed by our front of house team to make sure every client gets the perfect amount of time. Whether you have popped in on your lunch break for 6 pairs of tape extensions for added volume or are after super thick and luscious locks and have booked in for a full head of 22” Micro Rings. You can learn more about Micro Ring, Micro Bond, Tape and Clip In extensions over on our website to see which method might be best suited to you.

Washing Hair extensions

The end of an appointment is always the most rewarding part for a stylist. “Seeing how happy they are and the transformation you achieved — it’s very rewarding,” Katie explains.

As the day winds down in the salon the focus shifts to resetting the salon for the next day “At the end of the day, we make sure all our trolleys are clean, and the salon looks fresh for tomorrow” Katie explains. Keeping the salon in order makes everything run smoothly and maintains a welcoming space for clients.

Sarah Mckenna

Sarah McKenna is the founder of Vixen & Blush and The London Hair Lab. Sarah graduated as a research biochemist in 2005 and started a career within the pharmaceutical industry, before becoming a hair extensions expert. In 2010, Sarah gained insight into the hair extensions industry and could see that clients had a very poor value/quality proposition. At that time, poor-quality hair extensions were available, at prohibitively high prices. Sarah left her initial career and set out on a mission to improve the hair extensions industry in the UK, using her research and development skills.

Spending 3 years securing a high-quality and sustainable supply of human hair, Sarah then developed new products and fitting techniques to allow long-term refits of the same hair. In this way, Sarah was able to offer hair extensions services at a more affordable price to clients, while improving the quality of the service for her clients.

With Vixen & Blush starting in 2012 as a 1 chair salon in London, Sarah quickly grew the business to what it is today, a team of more than 20 hair professionals working together as London’s leading hair extensions specialists.
