What Hair Extension Method Is Best For You?
It’s important that, when getting hair extensions, you choose the right method for your hair type and the event they’re for. The method you choose depends on the occasion, your natural hair, and how long you’d like to wear them. A bride with lots of celebrations coming up may choose a longer-lasting method, whereas a party guest wanting extra volume for a weekend may choose a temporary method. Our Senior Hair Extensions Specialist, Chloe, says:
“Extensions are great for special occasions because they can really hold a style, better than your natural hair, so you don’t need to worry about frizz or curls dropping throughout your night.”

Reusable and discreet. Ideal for those wanting flexibility and budget management without compromising on the finished look.
Perfect for finer hair. Small and discreet with seamless movement. Ideal for brides wanting extensions for multiple events.
Best for strong, dense roots. Durable and reusable with excellent hold and structure for all day styles.
Zero commitment. Instant volume and length. Ideal for wedding guests, bridesmaids and one-off events.
“I think micro bonds are perfect for events. They’re so versatile, and we can make them really small, so you get lots of volume, and it can work for intricate hairstyles.”

What to Book and When For Your Bridal Hair
The wedding season moves quickly, particularly from early spring through to autumn. If you’re planning extensions for a wedding, engagement party or hen celebration, having a good timeline ensures your hair is fitted, blended and styled without any stress.
Bridal Hair Extension Timeline
6 weeks before
Book your consultation at Vixen and Blush. A specialist will assess your hair, discuss your goals, colour match and fit a test piece.
4 weeks before
Finalise your hair colour. Extensions are matched to your current shade, so any changes after this point can affect the final blend.
Day before your appointment
Arrive with clean, straight hair ready for your fitting.
2 weeks before
Your fitting appointment. This gives extensions time to settle and feel completely natural, with enough time for a maintenance check if needed.
“I had a fitting with a bride who wanted to feel her best on her wedding day. We added soft volume to complement her natural hair. When we finished, she said it was exactly how she’d always imagined herself looking as a bride.”

Clip-in Timeline:
Slightly less planning is needed for clip-in hair extensions, but it’s still good to be prepared.
For a big event, we recommend booking a Colour Match, Fitting, Cut and Style appointment. During which your stylist will:
Chat
Discuss what you’d like to achieve on the day.
Colour Match
Find the most accurate clip-in shade for your hair.
Fitting
Learn how to apply your clip-ins yourself at home.
Cut and Style
Blended and styled to suit your hair and event look perfectly.
Before your appointment, make sure your hair colour is exactly how it will be on the day of the event. This is so your stylist can get the most accurate shade of clip-ins for you.
We advise that you avoid cutting your hair too close to the event, as a blunt or fresh cut can make blending more difficult. It’s also important to practise applying your clip-ins beforehand, as it can take a little time to feel confident. You could also arrange for a stylist experienced with clip-ins to style your hair on the day.

Mistakes to Avoid Before The Big Day
When it comes to weddings and events, your hair extensions can truly elevate your whole look, and the secret to getting them absolutely perfect is in the planning. Extensions are so much more than a regular appointment; they involve a thorough consultation, careful colour matching, and precise fitting to ensure everything looks and feels flawless. Giving yourself plenty of time means we can get every detail just right, so you can sit back, relax and feel completely confident, especially when the cameras come out! Our Senior Hair Extensions Specialist Laleta recommends:
“I always tell brides not to make any big changes when it comes to their hair on their wedding day. It’s best to enhance what you have already, maybe adding a little volume or length, so you feel your best, most confident self on such an important day”
Things to Avoid
- Avoid changing your hair colour after your extensions have been matched, as this can affect how seamlessly they blend.
- Hold off on a blunt cut immediately before your fitting, as this can make it harder to achieve a natural, seamless finish.
Preparing Your Extensions Before the Event
Looking after your extensions properly in the lead up to your big day really does make all the difference! A few small habits, like avoiding oils and using the right shampoo, can keep your extensions looking glossy, seamless and absolutely stunning when it matters most. Here are our top tips to keep them in perfect condition:
Washing
- Use a clarifying or volumising shampoo
- Apply conditioner to mid-lengths and ends only
Styling
- Always use a heat protectant before styling
- Detangle gently with a Tangle Teezer
Overnight
- Thoroughly dry extensions after washing and never sleep with wet hair
- Loose braid or low ponytail with a silk hair tie before bed
Products we recommend are:
Semi Di Lino Purifying Low Shampoo

Sarah McKenna is the founder of Vixen & Blush and The London Hair Lab. Sarah graduated as a research biochemist in 2005 and started a career within the pharmaceutical industry, before becoming a hair extensions expert. In 2010, Sarah gained insight into the hair extensions industry and could see that clients had a very poor value/quality proposition. At that time, poor-quality hair extensions were available, at prohibitively high prices. Sarah left her initial career and set out on a mission to improve the hair extensions industry in the UK, using her research and development skills.
Spending 3 years securing a high-quality and sustainable supply of human hair, Sarah then developed new products and fitting techniques to allow long-term refits of the same hair. In this way, Sarah was able to offer hair extensions services at a more affordable price to clients, while improving the quality of the service for her clients.
With Vixen & Blush starting in 2012 as a 1 chair salon in London, Sarah quickly grew the business to what it is today, a team of more than 20 hair professionals working together as London’s leading hair extensions specialists.
