Being a hair extensions specialist salon, we do hair extensions all day long and know what the best care for your extensions at home is. Below we have detailed our top tips to keeping that salon worthy hair:
Washing Hair Extensions
Make sure you brush through your hair, starting at the ends with a tangle teaser and remove any tangles.
Make sure to wash your hair regularly to not allow the root to go greasy
Only ever wash your hair in the shower (never the bath)
Allow the water to run from the roots to the tips and do not scrub or rub your bonds/ rings in a round motion
Rinse for double the amount of time then you normally do
Products
Use a clarifying shampoo or volume shampoo and lather on top of your head where there are no extensions
Use conditioner on the ends of your hair only
Drying
Never put your head upside down, this means that you cannot wrap your hair in a turban.
Hair extensions need to be dried at the root within 30 minutes of washing
Don’t leave your hair wet for long periods of time
Do not tip your head upside down to blow dry your hair
Use your fingers to begin with when drying your hair and only use a brush when the hair is 80% dry.
Don’t brush your hair aggressively when wet as this can cause too much tugging on your own hair.
Styling
You can use any heat styling tools!
If you style your hair, it holds well and will last up to 3 days.
Brushing
Use a tangle teaser of soft bristle brush
When brushing your hair you should use two hands, one to hold your hair just below the extension connection area and the other to brush gently with a tangle teaser or soft bristle brush.
Sleeping / Gym
We would advise putting your hair in a low plait or ponytail when you go to sleep or do exercise.
Only low styles are allowed, we wouldn’t recommend high ponytails or top knots as these pulls on the connections.
Dyeing
You can dye your t-section as normal.
Do not put any dye on the connection
Going on holiday
If you’re going on holiday and in and out of a swimming pool, we would recommend putting your hair into a low plait or ponytail
Once out the water take your hair out of the style and let the sun dry your hair
Rinse any chlorine or sea water out of your hair to prevent discoloration
Finally, you must NOT wear your hair extension for longer than the recommended wear time. After this time your hair extensions have grown out too far and this can lead to matting which can be very difficult to remove.
