There is an optimal way to wash your hair extensions at home for that salon-worthy bounce!

Below we give you the insider secrets straight from our specialist stylists. We all want to re-create that fresh out the salon hair that is so bouncy and fresh!  Not only is it important to use salon quality shampoo but also to ensure you are washing your hair extensions the right way to keep them in the best condition.

Washing Hair Extensions Vixen & Blush

Whether you’ve got a permanent or semi-permanent method it’s important to follow the maintenance guide to ensure your hair is kept in perfect condition and allowed to grow freely while wearing your hair extensions.

Top tops for washing hair extensions:

  • Use a salon quality clarifying shampoo for oily hair; use salon quality volumizing shampoo for regular/dry hair. To find the best products for you read our blog post here!
  • Wash your hair in the shower, never the bath or upside down.
  • Massage/lather shampoo ONLY where there are no connections (on the top of your head) then – change your action when you come to cleaning the connections.
  • Use your fingers in a downward motion to encourage the shampoo/water to rinse over the hair extensions. Only downwards (not up and down).
  • Rinse twice as usual to ensure all hair is free from shampoo especially around the ears where shampoo can get clogged.
  • Product build-up can happen if you don’t wash your hair thoroughly. This can lead to sticky roots and matting and is not reversible. So do not be afraid to touch the connections. Just do it in a downwards motion.

We would advise against using supermarket shampoo or any moisturising shampoo. When washing your hair don’t rub over the connections in a circular motion.

At Vixen & Blush we stock Oway and Shu Uemura products in the salon. When you come in for your appointment our stylists can talk you through the best products to use for your hair type and you can purchase them on the day!

The 4 golden rules to live by when taking care of your extensions:

  1. No scrubbing your scalp in a round motion
  2. No oily or wet roots
  3. No over-directing the connections
  4. No pulling!

Sarah Mckenna

Sarah McKenna is the founder of Vixen & Blush and The London Hair Lab. Sarah graduated as a research biochemist in 2005 and started a career within the pharmaceutical industry, before becoming a hair extensions expert. In 2010, Sarah gained insight into the hair extensions industry and could see that clients had a very poor value/quality proposition. At that time, poor-quality hair extensions were available, at prohibitively high prices. Sarah left her initial career and set out on a mission to improve the hair extensions industry in the UK, using her research and development skills.

Spending 3 years securing a high-quality and sustainable supply of human hair, Sarah then developed new products and fitting techniques to allow long-term refits of the same hair. In this way, Sarah was able to offer hair extensions services at a more affordable price to clients, while improving the quality of the service for her clients.

With Vixen & Blush starting in 2012 as a 1 chair salon in London, Sarah quickly grew the business to what it is today, a team of more than 20 hair professionals working together as London’s leading hair extensions specialists.
