From the best shampoos to use to winter hair tips, we sat down with one of our hair extension stylists, Brodie to ask the burning hair questions you really want answered.

What products are you loving to keep your hair healthy this Winter?

I really like using the colour wow coconut-infused leave in treatment, it’s got safe ingredients, and it keeps my hair healthy.

What has been your standout product of 2023?

The colour wow dream coat (extra strength). I get quite frizzy hair, so it works amazingly to calm that frizz down. It works perfectly with our hair extensions and helps keeps that frizz at bay throughout the year.

Which product do you recommend the most to Vixen and Blush clients?

The GHD bodyguard protector spray because you can use it on wet and dry hair. When you have extensions remember to still use a heat protector spray, this product makes sure you can have a really styled look without compromising the condition of your own hair.

What style will you be doing this Christmas party season?

All year round I tend to do more of a beachy wave with straighter ends but when its Christmas time I love to do a Hollywood wave so it’s a bit more glam!

Is there a product that will help my hair dry faster?

The colour wow speed dry, you can just spray it through layer by layer, and it helps it accelerate the drying process which can really help by having less heat on your hair.

Should you shampoo your hair twice or is that a myth?

It is not a myth. With no extensions the first shampoo is used to get rid of any dirt whereas the second shampoo gives it a really good clean while also giving the benefit of the shampoo that you’re using.

This is similar when you have extensions, it’s even more important to do two shampoos as it’s you’ve got to be very gentle going in a downwards motion so you want to make sure it’s clean or it would cause an itchy scalp.

What product is at the top of your Christmas Wishlist?

I don’t want to ever run out of the Bed Head, head rush super fine shine spray that you can spray all over the hair. You don’t want to spray it at the root directly where you don’t need it. But if you are blonde, it can be difficult to get that shine so this product can make it look nice and glossy which blondes find hard to achieve. Alternatively, if you have dark hair, it can help it look glossy and healthy! It’s on my list all year round but especially at Christmas where you want it to look super healthy.

Is it worth investing in shampoo and conditioners?

Absolutely, there are so many bad ingredients that you find in the cheaper alternatives like drugstore shampoo and conditioners. Anybody that is on a hair growth journey wanting to see improvements with their hair, you can spend a lot of money on beautiful styling products but if you’re still using a cheap shampoo and conditioner, you’re not going to see the results that you’re after.

These cheaper products can make your hair brittle and weak so it’s worth investing in salon quality products. You also end up using so little of these good products, so it leads to having them for a lot longer.

Sarah Mckenna

Sarah McKenna is the founder of Vixen & Blush and The London Hair Lab. Sarah graduated as a research biochemist in 2005 and started a career within the pharmaceutical industry, before becoming a hair extensions expert. In 2010, Sarah gained insight into the hair extensions industry and could see that clients had a very poor value/quality proposition. At that time, poor-quality hair extensions were available, at prohibitively high prices. Sarah left her initial career and set out on a mission to improve the hair extensions industry in the UK, using her research and development skills.

Spending 3 years securing a high-quality and sustainable supply of human hair, Sarah then developed new products and fitting techniques to allow long-term refits of the same hair. In this way, Sarah was able to offer hair extensions services at a more affordable price to clients, while improving the quality of the service for her clients.

With Vixen & Blush starting in 2012 as a 1 chair salon in London, Sarah quickly grew the business to what it is today, a team of more than 20 hair professionals working together as London’s leading hair extensions specialists.
