Are you new to hair extensions and unsure of which method to choose from? We have put together a handy guide on the different types of hair extension method to choose from so you can identify which method might be most suitable for your hair type and suit your lifestyle.
What are the different types of hair extensions?
Temporary methods including clip-in extensions and wefts where large pieces of hair are added that you can easily take in and out each day.
Semi-Permanent hair extensions include tape extensions that are re-usable and last for 6-8 weeks before they need to be re-fitted
Permanent methods include Micro Rings and Micro Bond that are attached strand by strand and worn for 3 months. Micro Rings are re-usable whereas with Micro Bonds new hair is needed each time.
Tape Hair Extensions
Tape extensions are a very popular choice as they are a semi-permanent method which lasts between 6-8 weeks and can be re-used. They are great for thinner hair types, and you can control the amount of hair being added in your appointment. Whether you want a small volume boost with 6 pairs of tape or want to go mega all out with 28 pairs for the ultimate volume and length
Tape extensions don’t damage your hair at all if they are applied by a skilled hair extension stylist. In many cases our clients have found their natural hair has improved whilst having hair extensions as less styling is needed to make their hair look full. Keep your hair healthy with this reusable and semi-permanent method.
If you can’t make it to our central London salon, then you can also shop our tape extensions online and have them delivered straight to you. We would advise having them fitted with a hair extension specialist in your area and if you need any help with colour matching then don’t hesitate to get in touch and one of Team Vixen will be happy to help with your colour match.
Micro Ring Hair Extensions
Micro Ring extensions are a very popular method as they are a permanent method that last for 3 months. Individual strands of hair are fitted using a small metal ring. There is no heat or glue used in the fitting or removal instead a metal ring is used and clamped closed to secure the hair in place. The fitting and removal process is very safe, easy, and clean.
If you decide to add a lot of length at the first fitting then the hair can be re-used many times, making this method a more affordable way of wearing hair extensions in the long term.
Micro Bond Hair Extensions
Micro Bond extensions are a safe and discreet way of adding hair extensions. They are a great method if you have sparse hair at the root and aren’t suitable for other hair extension methods. Micro Bonds are a hard-wearing method which you can place further forward or lower down the nape compared to other methods. They last for 3 months and then you will need new hair.
Clip In Hair Extensions
Clip in hair extensions can be easily attached to your natural hair. You can do this very easily at home for a big night out or special event.
Clip in hair extensions are the least permanent method as you can remove them when necessary and attach them whenever you like. They are quick and easy to use and a perfect extension choice for someone who wants instant length and thickness added to their natural hair. If you invest in the best quality hair and follow the correct care and maintenance your clip in set will last for years.
How do I book an appointment?
The best place to start on your hair extension journey is booking a free consultation, we offer these in our central London salon and via Facetime depending on what works best for you. It’s super easy to book in for a free consultation, you can book online or call our customer relations manager Natasha.
If you’re interested in comparing the different types of hair extensions a consultation is the perfect time to find out about the different methods and what would work best for you. In your consultation you can have a test piece fitted so you can wear the hair and see how comfortable it is for you before deciding to book your appointment.

Sarah McKenna is the founder of Vixen & Blush and The London Hair Lab. Sarah graduated as a research biochemist in 2005 and started a career within the pharmaceutical industry, before becoming a hair extensions expert. In 2010, Sarah gained insight into the hair extensions industry and could see that clients had a very poor value/quality proposition. At that time, poor-quality hair extensions were available, at prohibitively high prices. Sarah left her initial career and set out on a mission to improve the hair extensions industry in the UK, using her research and development skills.
Spending 3 years securing a high-quality and sustainable supply of human hair, Sarah then developed new products and fitting techniques to allow long-term refits of the same hair. In this way, Sarah was able to offer hair extensions services at a more affordable price to clients, while improving the quality of the service for her clients.
With Vixen & Blush starting in 2012 as a 1 chair salon in London, Sarah quickly grew the business to what it is today, a team of more than 20 hair professionals working together as London’s leading hair extensions specialists.
