Discolouration of hair extensions can be caused by a variety of factors but there are ways of avoiding those triggers!

The main triggers of hair discolouration are chlorine, sea water and bad chemicals in products! But not to worry all these triggers can be avoided with a few simple steps.

Invest in the right kind of sun-cream.

There are a lot of sun creams on the market now that are designed to keep the coral reef safe from bad chemicals – mostly Avobenzone, Octocrylene and Oxybenzone. These are the same chemicals that can stain hair extensions which can turn them a peachy or orange shade.

You can easily avoid this happening by purchasing the right mineral-based sun cream. We would advise using Blue Lizard, Green People, Hawaiian Tropic Mineral and Hello Sunday The Mineral One which are all coral reef friendly and don’t contain any bad staining chemicals. All these sun creams are easily available online or in your local Boots – just make sure you buy the mineral version of the brand.

Top tip if you’re going on holiday why not decant your favourite sun creams, shampoos, and conditioners into travel sized bottles! Have your favourite salon quality products readily available whilst away and make sure you bring along your tangle teaser to ensure your hair is kept looking it’s best.

Once you have invested in the best sun creams, we also have a few more tips and tricks for keeping your hair extensions looking their best whilst you are on holiday or abroad.

Looking after your hair extensions on holiday

Chlorine can be one of the key triggers of hair discolouration, especially when you are on holiday going in and out of the swimming pool. The best thing to do is to put your hair in a low ponytail or plait for when you go in the swimming pool or sea. Once out of the water release your hair from the style and rinse any chlorine or sea water out of your hair thoroughly.
